The next Call of Duty title, which many have dubbed ‘Black Ops Gulf War’, will be featured at the upcoming Xbox Summer Showcase, poised to take place in June. It’s expected that the game will be revealed before then, but during the June event, there will be something of a deep dive into the title, perhaps showcasing a full mission walkthrough. This is set to be one of the most highly anticipated Call of Duty games in recent history and it has reportedly been in development for several years.
This will be the first Call of Duty title to be released since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, but it’s believed that the tech titan hasn’t had a hand in creating this one, owing to the timeline. It’s also not expected to be released on Xbox Game Pass when it launches in October (unconfirmed).
Fruits of Their Labour
Black Ops Gulf War is another multi-studio title, with different Activision subsidiaries working on various parts of the game. The game’s campaign – which is supposed to be an open-world epic – has been created by Raven Software. Treyarch has shaped the multiplayer and COD Zombies offering, the latter of which is reportedly returning to a traditional round-based formula.
Given the recent failings of the franchise, it appears that Activision Blizzard (and associated studios) are leaning into community-driven feedback for Black Ops Gulf War. There’s a lot of fan service being poured into the production of this game, and the fact that it has taken so long to put it together bodes well for fans of the series. Everyone knows that Modern Warfare 3 was something of a rush job – which is why the campaign was only three hours long – so fans are now hungry for the depth being teased in Black Ops Gulf War.
There are other games set to be revealed or updated at the Xbox Summer Showcase, but Black Ops Gulf War will likely take centre stage. We’re set to hear updates regarding Gears 6 and State of Decay 3, among other games, but millions of gamers are waiting patiently for the next Call of Duty title.
Modern Warfare 3 simply failed to hit the right spot, echoing the sentiment around Modern Warfare 2 (2022) and COD Vanguard (2021). It’s time for Call of Duty to fix up and become something worth playing again, and it can do that with Black Ops Gulf War.
