Every single Pokemon has a type. This type dictates what types of moves they can use with a boosted power, as well as what types of moves will hit them for boosted or reduced damage. Knowing is half the battle, especially because the damage modifiers have been altered for Pokemon GO. With fewer moves to choose from, making use of a Pokemon GO Weakness Chart to make sure your main move is getting as much value in longer battles as a gym takeover is paramount to success.
Why do types matter?
Pokemon’s different types act as a very advanced game of rock-paper-scissors. Made even more complicated when your Pokemon can have up to 2 types. Thankfully, unlike Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, terastallization is not a mechanic in current Pokemon GO at the time of writing, so your Pokemon’s type isn’t going to be changing mid-battle, outside of the occasional mega evolution. When hitting a Pokemon with a move when it is weak will lead to it taking increased damage, with the opposite being true for the types it resists.
- Normal Effective – Never mentioned by name, but this means that a Pokemon is not weak to or does not resist a move. Deals 1x damage.
- Super Effective – If a move is “Super Effective!” against a Pokemon, that means it is weak to it. Super Effective moves deal 1.6x damage in Pokemon GO.
- Not Very Effective – If a move is “Not Very Effective…” against a Pokemon, that means it resists the move. Not Very Effective moves deal 0.65x damage in Pokemon GO.
- Unaffected/Immune – If a move would “have no effect” in the Pokemon games, it would normally do 0x damage. The damage inflicted by this in Pokémon GO has been adjusted to 0.39x.
- Double Super Effective – If a move would be “Super Effective!” against both types a Pokemon has (IE: Water is Super Effective against Rock & Ground-type Pokemon), it is Double Super Effective. In Pokemon GO, Double Super Effective moves do a staggering 2.56x damage.

Refer back to this whenever you need to figure out what moves and Pokemon to take into a Gym battle.
To get even more value out of your attacks, opt for the Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB). If the move being used is one that the Pokemon using it has, it does 1.5x damage! Coverage can be nice, to have your Pokemon able to surprise attack a Pokemon. However, if two Pokemon with the same stats are using the same move, the one which has that move’s type will inflict more damage.
